How to use the Sort Lines
- 1 Paste your list with one item per line.
- 2 Choose a sort order, such as alphabetical A–Z or numeric.
- 3 Copy or download the sorted list.
Put any list in order
Sorting by hand is tedious and easy to get wrong. Paste names, keywords, file names or numbers and get a sorted list instantly.
Sort orders
- Alphabetical (A–Z / Z–A) – sorts by character. By default the comparison ignores capitalisation, so apple and Apple end up next to each other; enable Case-sensitive to sort uppercase letters first.
- Numeric – sorts by the first number found in each line, so item 2 comes before item 10 (an alphabetical sort would put 10 first). Lines without a number are placed at the end. Negative numbers and decimals are supported.
- Length – shortest or longest lines first; handy for finding outliers in data.
- Reverse order – flips the list upside down without sorting.
Sorting is stable: lines that compare as equal keep their original relative order.
Tip: combine with other tools
To get a sorted list of unique values, first remove duplicates with the Remove Duplicate Lines tool, then sort the result here.
Frequently asked questions
Why does “10” come before “2” in some sorters?
Alphabetical sorting compares character by character, and “1” comes before “2”. Choose the numeric sort order to sort by the actual value of the numbers.
Is sorting case-sensitive?
Not by default. Enable “Case-sensitive” if you want uppercase letters sorted before lowercase letters.
Can I sort lines in reverse alphabetical order?
Yes, choose “Alphabetical (Z–A)”.
