How to use the Word Counter
- 1 Type or paste your text into the box.
- 2 Read the word, character, sentence and paragraph counts – they update as you type.
- 3 Check the estimated reading and speaking time to plan articles, speeches or presentations.
Why count words?
Word and character limits are everywhere: school essays, job applications, abstracts, social media posts and SEO metadata all come with a maximum length. A word counter tells you at a glance whether your text fits, so you can edit with a clear target instead of guessing.
What this word counter measures
- Words – sequences of characters separated by spaces, tabs or line breaks. Numbers and hyphenated words such as well-known count as one word.
- Characters – every letter, digit, space and punctuation mark. Emoji and accented letters count as a single character.
- Characters without spaces – useful for translation quotes and some form fields.
- Sentences – text ending in a full stop, question mark, exclamation mark or ellipsis. Decimal numbers such as 2.5 are not counted as sentence breaks.
- Paragraphs and lines – paragraphs are separated by an empty line; lines by a single line break.
Reading and speaking time
Reading time is based on an average silent reading speed of about 238 words per minute for adults reading non-fiction. Speaking time uses roughly 150 words per minute, a comfortable pace for presentations and podcasts. Your own pace may differ, but the estimates are a reliable way to plan a blog post or a five-minute talk.
Common length guidelines
| Text type | Typical length |
|---|---|
| Meta description | 120–160 characters |
| Tweet / X post | up to 280 characters |
| Blog post | 1,000–2,000 words |
| College application essay | 250–650 words |
Your text stays private
The counting happens entirely in your browser. Your text is never uploaded, logged or stored, so you can safely check confidential documents, unpublished articles or personal letters.
Frequently asked questions
How are words counted?
A word is any group of characters separated by whitespace (spaces, tabs or line breaks). Hyphenated words and numbers count as one word, which matches how most word processors count.
Do spaces count as characters?
Yes. The “Characters” total includes spaces and line breaks. Use “Characters (no spaces)” if you need the count without any whitespace.
Is there a limit to how much text I can paste?
No practical limit – the tool comfortably handles texts of hundreds of thousands of words because everything is calculated on your own device.
Is my text saved anywhere?
No. The text never leaves your browser and disappears as soon as you close or refresh the page.
