We built Synsi to be useful without collecting your personal data. This page explains what little data is processed and why.
Tools that run in your browser
Most tools – including all text, developer and calculator tools – run entirely on your device. The text, numbers and settings you enter are not sent to our servers, not stored and not visible to us.
Tools that use our servers
Tools that process files on the server (such as image or spreadsheet converters) receive your file only to create the result. Uploaded and generated files are stored temporarily and deleted automatically within one hour. We do not look at, share or keep the contents.
The Website shortcuts tool looks up a website’s icon on our server when you add a shortcut. For that we receive only the website’s address (scheme and host, never the page you linked to), fetch its home page and icon, and keep the icon in a cache for up to a week to avoid repeating the lookup. The address of your shortcut itself is not stored on our servers unless you turn on syncing it (see Sync settings below).
The Cover grid maker sends what you search for (a game or movie title) to our server, which asks The Movie Database (TMDB) or Retrollect for matching titles and keeps the answer in a cache for up to a day. The covers themselves are shown straight from TMDB’s and Retrollect’s servers, which therefore receive your IP address and browser details, as with any image on the web. When you download a grid as an image, our server fetches the Retrollect covers in it for you, because their server does not allow your browser to read them. The grid you make stays in your browser; it is saved in your account only when you are signed in and have not turned that off in Sync settings (see below).
API
When you use our API, the input you send is processed to return the result and is not stored. To enforce rate limits we temporarily keep a counter linked to your IP address or API key. For API keys we store the name and email address you give us so we can contact you about your key.
Cookies and Google Analytics
Synsi does not use advertising cookies, and our server sets no cookies on public pages.
We use Google Analytics 4 (Google Ireland Ltd.) to understand how visitors use the site, for example which pages are visited and from which country. Google Analytics places cookies (such as _ga) and processes your IP address and device information; Google may transfer data to the United States under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. Google Analytics starts as soon as you visit the site. If you click “Decline” in the cookie notice, measuring stops at once and the analytics cookies are removed; nothing more is measured on later visits. You can change your choice at any time via “Cookie settings” at the bottom of every page. The text, numbers and files you enter in our tools are never sent to Google Analytics.
Your consent choice, a dismissed language suggestion, your dark mode setting, your personal tool board (the tools you pinned and how they are arranged) the tool windows you left open on the start page, including what you typed in them, your notes in the notepad, your website shortcuts, your OIN bookmarks, your cover grids and the pipelines of the Data Studio (its steps and settings – never the files you open in it, which are only processed in your browser) are remembered in your browser’s local storage. The picture you are editing in the photo editor is kept as a draft in your browser’s IndexedDB storage, so a reload does not lose it; it is never synced or sent anywhere, and the editor’s Close button (or removing that copy of the tool) deletes it. The rest never leaves your device unless you sign in and turn on syncing (OIN bookmarks and cover grids sync by default once you are signed in). To forget open windows, close them.
Optional account for syncing your tool board
You can use every tool without an account. If you choose to sign in, we send a one-time sign-in link to your email address; an account is only created when you use that link. We then store your email address, preferred language and the layout of your tool board (which tools you pinned, as icon or widget, and in which order), so the same board appears on your other devices. What you enter in the tools is not stored, with exceptions you choose yourself in Sync settings (in the account menu), each for every device where you are signed in: open windows – the windows open on the start page, their position and size, and what you typed in them – notes – the text of every note in the notepad – website shortcuts – every list of shortcuts, with names, addresses and icons – OIN bookmarks – every list of organisations you bookmarked in the OIN lookup, with their OINs and names – Data Studio pipelines – the steps, settings and saved recipes of every workspace, never the files you open in it – and cover grids – every grid you made, with the titles and covers in it; these two are on by default once you are signed in. Turning one off removes it from your account straight away; your devices keep their own copy.
Signing in sets a strictly necessary session cookie on the account pages, which keeps you signed in; no consent is needed for it. Sign-in emails are sent by our mail provider and contain only the link. You can download your data as a JSON file and delete your account at any time on the account page; deleting it removes your email address, synced board, synced windows, synced notes and saved files immediately.
My files: documents you save in your account
If you are signed in, some tools (such as the text editor) can save what you made as a file in My files. This only happens when you click Save. We then store the file, its name and folder, its size and when it was changed, in a private area that only your account can open: files have no public web address, are never shown to anyone else and are not used for anything but giving them back to you. Your account has a storage limit (100 MB at the time of writing), shown in My files. You can rename, download or permanently delete any file or folder there, and download all your files as a zip file. Deleting a file removes it straight away; deleting your account removes all of your files.
The legal basis is the performance of the service you requested (Article 6(1)(b) GDPR).
VeilChat: private messages with a virtual number
VeilChat is separate from the Synsi account above: it never asks for or stores a name, email address or phone number, and a VeilChat number is never linked to a Synsi account. We store your virtual number, a hash of your PIN (never the PIN itself), your conversations (which two numbers write to each other, and up to which message each has read), your messages, the numbers you blocked, and for each signed-in device a session: a random token kept as a hash, a coarse label such as "Firefox – Windows", and when it was created and last used – no IP address. Signing in sets a strictly necessary cookie that is only sent to VeilChat's own requests and cannot be read by scripts.
Messages are sent over HTTPS and stored encrypted with our application key. This is not end-to-end encryption: technically, Synsi can read stored messages. We do so only to handle a report, and every such access is recorded with the moderator and a reason. Messages are deleted automatically after 30 days, on every device; "delete for me" removes one of your messages from your own view at once. Database backups may still contain deleted messages – encrypted – until they are replaced.
A report contains the two numbers, the reason and, if you report a message, an encrypted copy of it; reports are deleted after 90 days. While you use VeilChat our server sees your IP address: it is used only in short-lived, hashed counters that limit sign-in attempts and abuse, and in the standard server logs below. Your number is therefore a pseudonym, not anonymity. Deleting your number (under Account & privacy) removes your sessions, blocks and the messages you sent immediately; the number itself stays reserved so it is never given to someone else. Without an email address we cannot recover a forgotten PIN.
Notifications are off until you turn them on in VeilChat or in ⚙ › Notifications. Your choice is stored in your browser only. A notification is shown by your own browser and operating system while a Synsi tab is open; it says only that there is a new message – never the number or the text – and nothing is sent to a push service. With notifications on, an open but hidden tab checks for new messages once a minute.
The legal basis is the performance of the service you requested (Article 6(1)(b) GDPR); the abuse limits rest on our legitimate interest in keeping the service safe (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR).
Usage counts
To understand which tools are popular we also count how often each tool is used per day. These counts contain no personal data: no IP addresses, no identifiers and no content.
Server logs
Like every website, our hosting provider keeps standard server logs (such as IP address, requested page and time) for security and troubleshooting. These logs are kept for a limited period and are not used to profile visitors.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to access, correct or delete personal data we hold about you, for example the details linked to an API key. Contact us and we will respond within one month.
Changes
If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top of this page.
