How to use the Dog Years Calculator
- 1 Choose the animal.
- 2 Enter its age in years and months (for dogs, also pick the size).
- 3 Read the age in human years and the matching life stage.
Size matters
Small dogs live longer than big dogs, and that shows in how fast they age. All dogs grow up quickly: after one year a dog is roughly 15 in human terms, and after two years about 24. From then on a small dog adds about 4 human years per year, while a giant breed such as a Great Dane adds about 7.
| Size | Adult weight | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Small | under 9 kg (20 lb) | Chihuahua, Jack Russell, Dachshund |
| Medium | 9–23 kg (20–50 lb) | Beagle, Cocker Spaniel, Border Collie |
| Large | 23–41 kg (50–90 lb) | Labrador, German Shepherd, Boxer |
| Giant | over 41 kg (90 lb) | Great Dane, Newfoundland, St. Bernard |
The epigenetic formula
In 2019 researchers at UC San Diego compared DNA methylation – chemical marks that change with age – in Labrador retrievers and humans. Their formula, human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31, suggests puppies age even faster than the chart says: a one-year-old dog is about 31 in human terms. It was developed for Labradors, so treat it as an interesting alternative rather than a replacement.
When is a dog a senior?
Small dogs are usually considered seniors from about 10–12 years, large breeds from about 6–8 years. Senior dogs benefit from twice-yearly vet check-ups, adapted food and gentle daily exercise.
Frequently asked questions
How old is a 10-year-old dog in human years?
About 56 for a small dog, 60 for a medium dog, 66 for a large dog and 79 for a giant breed.
Why do large dogs age faster?
Large breeds grow fast and have shorter lifespans, and age-related problems appear earlier. Scientists are still investigating the exact biological reasons.
How do I calculate my puppy’s age?
Enter the age in months. Under one year the calculator scales up to about 15 human years at the first birthday.
