Common conversions

From unit Value To unit Result
Pound-feet (lb-ft) 1 Newton-metres (N·m) 1.3558
Newton-metres (N·m) 1 Pound-feet (lb-ft) 0.7376
Pound-inches (lb-in) 1 Newton-metres (N·m) 0.113
Kilonewton-metres (kN·m) 1 Pound-feet (lb-ft) 737.5621

How to use the Torque Converter

  1. 1 Enter the torque value, for example from a workshop manual.
  2. 2 Choose the unit it is given in, such as Nm or lb-ft.
  3. 3 Choose the unit of your torque wrench and read the converted setting.

What torque measures

Torque is a turning force: a force applied at a distance from a pivot. It is calculated as force × lever arm, so units of torque combine a force and a length:

  • 1 newton-metre (Nm) – 1 N at a distance of 1 m. The SI unit.
  • 1 kilonewton-metre (kNm) = 1,000 Nm, used in structural engineering and large machinery.
  • 1 pound-foot (lb-ft) = 1.3558 Nm – 1 lbf at a distance of 1 ft.
  • 1 pound-inch (lb-in) = 0.11298 Nm – 1 lbf at 1 in; 12 lb-in make 1 lb-ft.

Engine torque

Car specifications list torque in Nm in most of the world and in lb-ft in the United States. A diesel engine with 400 Nm delivers 295 lb-ft, and a 300 lb-ft V8 delivers 407 Nm. Torque and power are related through engine speed: power in kW = torque in Nm × RPM ÷ 9,549.

Torque wrench settings

Workshop manuals give tightening torques for wheel nuts, spark plugs, cylinder heads and bicycle parts. Wheel nuts on a passenger car are typically tightened to about 100–140 Nm (74–103 lb-ft); always use the value for your vehicle. Small components such as bicycle stems or carbon seat posts are often specified in Nm or lb-in, sometimes as low as 4–6 Nm (35–53 lb-in), so convert carefully: confusing lb-ft with lb-in multiplies the force by 12 and can break the part.

lb-ft or ft-lb?

Pound-feet (lb-ft) and foot-pounds (ft-lb) are often used interchangeably for torque in everyday mechanics. Strictly, physicists use lb-ft for torque and ft-lb for energy or work, but the numerical conversion factor to newton-metres is the same: 1.3558.

Using a torque wrench correctly

Set the wrench in the unit printed on its scale, hold it by the handle rather than the extension and pull smoothly until it clicks. Tighten wheel nuts in a star pattern, and check them again after the first 50–100 km. Return a click-type wrench to its lowest setting after use to keep it accurate.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert Nm to lb-ft?

Multiply newton-metres by 0.737562. For example, 100 Nm is 73.76 lb-ft.

How many Nm is 1 lb-ft?

One pound-foot is 1.35582 Nm.

How many lb-in are in a lb-ft?

There are 12 pound-inches in one pound-foot.

Are ft-lbs and lb-ft the same?

For torque wrench settings, yes – both convert to 1.3558 Nm.
