What is BMI?
Body mass index relates your weight to your height: BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)². Someone who weighs 70 kg and is 1.75 m tall has a BMI of 70 / 1.75² = 22.9. In imperial units the formula is 703 × weight (lb) / height (in)².
BMI categories for adults
| BMI | Category (WHO) |
|---|---|
| below 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5 – 24.9 | Healthy weight |
| 25 – 29.9 | Overweight |
| 30 or higher | Obesity |
The healthy weight range shown by the calculator is the weight that corresponds to a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 at your height.
Limitations of BMI
BMI is a quick screening tool, not a diagnosis. It does not distinguish between muscle and fat, so athletes can have a high BMI while being very fit. It also doesn’t account for age, sex, ethnicity or where fat is stored – waist circumference is often a better indicator of health risk. BMI categories for children and teenagers use age- and sex-specific percentiles and differ from the adult table.

Frequently asked questions
What is a healthy BMI?
For adults, a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered a healthy weight by the World Health Organization.
Is BMI accurate for muscular people?
Not very. Muscle is heavier than fat, so muscular people can be classified as overweight even when their body fat is low.
Can I use this BMI calculator for children?
No. Children and teenagers need BMI-for-age percentile charts, which take growth into account.
