VAT in the Netherlands
In the Netherlands VAT is called BTW (belasting over de toegevoegde waarde). There are two main rates:
- 21% – the standard rate for most goods and services.
- 9% – the reduced rate for food and non-alcoholic drinks, books and newspapers, medicines, hairdressers, passenger transport and some other services.
A 0% rate applies to exports outside the EU and certain intra-EU supplies.
Examples
- €50 excluding 9% BTW: €50 × 1.09 = €54.50 including BTW.
- €121 including 21% BTW: €121 / 1.21 = €100 excluding BTW.
Invoicing in the Netherlands
Dutch invoices must show the BTW rate, the BTW amount and the amounts excluding BTW. Small businesses may qualify for the kleineondernemersregeling (KOR), which exempts them from charging BTW below a yearly turnover threshold. Check the Belastingdienst (Dutch Tax Administration) for current rules.
