VAT in Germany
German VAT is officially called Umsatzsteuer and commonly Mehrwertsteuer (MwSt). Germany has one of the lower standard rates in the EU:
- 19% – standard rate.
- 7% – reduced rate, for example for most food, books, newspapers, local public transport and hotel stays.
Examples
- €200 net at 19%: €200 × 1.19 = €238 gross (€38 MwSt).
- €107 gross at 7%: €107 / 1.07 = €100 net (€7 MwSt).
Brutto and netto
German invoices use netto for the amount excluding VAT and brutto for the amount including VAT. Small businesses can use the Kleinunternehmerregelung and invoice without VAT below a turnover threshold.
