Formula
GB = MB ÷ 1,000
In the decimal (SI) system used by storage manufacturers, network providers and most software today, one gigabyte is 1,000 megabytes. A 500 MB video is therefore 0.5 GB.
1,000 or 1,024?
Computers count in powers of two, so some operating systems use binary units: 1 GiB (gibibyte) = 1,024 MiB (mebibytes). Windows still shows binary values with the label “GB”, which is why a file can look slightly smaller in Explorer than on a download page. Choose MiB and GiB in the converter if you need the binary values.
Typical sizes
- A high-quality photo: 3–8 MB
- A song in MP3 format: 3–10 MB
- One hour of HD video streaming: around 3 GB
