How to use the Website Shortcuts
- 1 Type or paste a website address (example.com is enough) and press “Add shortcut”. Give it a name if you like; otherwise the site’s name is used.
- 2 The tile appears at once and picks up the website’s icon a moment later. Click it to open the site in a new tab.
- 3 Press “Edit shortcuts” to change a name or address, move a tile earlier or later, or remove it – a removal can be undone for a few seconds.
- 4 Pin the tool to My tools on the Synsi homepage to have your shortcuts next to your other widgets, and make as many separate lists as you need (work, home, news).
A start page of your own links
A browser’s bookmarks bar fills up quickly and stays hidden in a menu. A page of large, recognisable tiles is faster: you spot the logo, you click, you are there. Website Shortcuts is that page. Add the sites you use every day – mail, banking, a news site, your project board – and keep them next to the weather and the search box on your Synsi start page.
Where the icons come from
Every website can publish a small icon, its favicon, that browsers show in their tabs. Sites declare it with a <link rel="icon"> tag in the page head, or leave it at the standard location /favicon.ico. When you add a shortcut, Synsi reads the website’s home page, picks the best icon it declares, shrinks it to a few kilobytes and saves it with the shortcut. A site without a usable icon gets a tile with its first letter, and “Fetch the icon again” in the edit view tries once more.
Only the website’s address – never the exact page you linked to – is sent to Synsi for this lookup, so a link such as a private document or a login page stays between you and that site. Because the icon is stored with your shortcut, your browser does not contact the website just to draw its tile, and the website cannot tell that you keep a shortcut to it.
Where your shortcuts are stored
By default your list is saved in your browser (local storage) and never leaves your device. If you sign in, you can turn on Website shortcuts in Sync settings: your lists are then stored in your account and appear on every device where you are signed in. Turning it off again removes them from your account; your devices keep their own copy.
Good to know
- Several lists. Every copy of the tool has its own list: use “New list” on the tool page, or pin the tool to your board more than once.
- Up to 100 shortcuts per list. More than that is a sign it needs splitting into a second list.
- Addresses without a scheme are opened over https. Use the full address, including
http://, for sites that only support plain HTTP, and for pages on your own network such ashttp://nas.local(these get a letter tile, because Synsi cannot reach your private network to fetch their icon). - Clearing browser data deletes an unsynced list. Browser storage is removed when you clear site data. Sign in and turn on syncing to keep a copy in your account.

Frequently asked questions
How do the shortcuts get their icons?
When you add a shortcut, Synsi reads the website’s home page, takes the icon the site declares (or its /favicon.ico), shrinks it and stores it with the shortcut. Sites without a usable icon get a tile with their first letter.
Does Synsi see which pages I link to?
No. For the icon lookup only the website’s address (for example https://example.com) is sent, never the path or query of the page you linked to. The icon itself is stored with your shortcut, so showing the list does not contact the websites.
Where are my shortcuts saved?
In your browser, on your device. If you sign in and turn on Website shortcuts in Sync settings, they are also stored in your account and appear on all your devices.
Can I change a shortcut’s icon or name afterwards?
You can change the name and the address at any time, and fetch the icon again from the edit view. Changing the address to another website looks up that website’s icon.
Why does my shortcut only show a letter?
The website offers no icon Synsi could use, was unreachable at that moment, or is on a private network (such as http://localhost or a .local name), which Synsi cannot reach. Use “Fetch the icon again” to retry; the tile works either way.
